Shots fired up for season opener
Aldershot Town couldn’t have asked for a better pre-season, winning all five of their friendlies in emphatic style. The Shots started with a 6–0 demolition of Badshot Lea, where Tetek and Hargreaves produced highlight-reel finishes. They followed that up with a gritty comeback win against Met Police, overturning a 2–0 deficit thanks to Ghandour’s brace and a late Anderson strike. Momentum carried into a 3–1 win at Billericay, with Ghandour again on target before Thomas sealed it with a header.
Confidence grew as Aldershot dispatched Eastbourne Borough 3–0, controlling the game from start to finish. Barrett’s free-kick opened the scoring before Mullins and Ghandour added gloss to the performance. The final tune-up saw the Shots shut out Dorking Wanderers 2–0, with Barrett stealing the headlines with a well-taken brace. Across all fixtures, Aldershot displayed attacking fluidity, sharp finishing, and defensive resilience, rotating heavily while maintaining dominance.
Several players have emerged as pre-season standouts. Josh Barrett netted four goals and pulled strings creatively, while Hady Ghandour proved lethal in front of goal with five strikes. Dejan Tetek dictated midfield tempo, supported by Hargreaves and Widdrington’s leadership. Tyler Frost caused havoc on the flanks, and keepers Dewhurst and Nash both made vital saves. Aldershot Town have bolstered their squad further ahead of the 25/26 season with two defensive signings. Experienced left-sided player Matt Penney joins permanently, bringing versatility across defence and midfield after spells with Sheffield Wednesday, Ipswich, Motherwell, Charlton, and even Germany’s St Pauli. Having impressed during pre-season training, Penney adds leadership, technical ability, and higher-league experience to the Shots’ ranks. Meanwhile, 21-year-old centre-back James Clarridge arrives on loan from Watford until January. A former England youth international, Clarridge gained valuable senior minutes at St Albans City last season and is recognised for his composure on the ball and physical presence. Both signings strengthen Aldershot’s defensive options and fit Tommy Widdrington’s possession-based style heading into the new campaign.
